📞 (905) 261-9082Framing is the structural skeleton of a building — the arrangement of studs, headers, joists, and beams that defines the shape of rooms and supports the loads above. In renovation work, framing typically means building new interior walls, modifying or removing existing walls, creating new door or window openings, or framing additions and new spaces like finished basements or expanded rooms.
Framing is what everything else is built on. Walls that are not plumb, corners that are not square, and headers that are undersized for the load above all create problems that become progressively harder and more expensive to fix as the project moves forward. By the time drywall is hung, insulation is in, and finishes are installed, correcting a framing error means undoing a significant amount of work. Getting framing right at the start is what makes the rest of the renovation go cleanly.
Removing a load-bearing wall requires installing a properly sized beam or header to carry the load that the wall was supporting. The beam spans the opening and transfers that load to the structure on either side. The sizing and installation method depend on what is being supported above — floor joists, roof structure, or additional floors. This work should be assessed and documented properly before demo begins. We walk through what is involved during the quoting process and can advise on whether a structural engineer's assessment is appropriate for your specific project.
Blocking refers to lumber installed between studs or joists to provide a solid anchoring point for items that need secure fastening — grab bars, heavy shelving, mounted televisions, cabinetry, and similar fixtures. Installing blocking during the framing stage is fast and inexpensive. Installing it after drywall is up requires cutting into finished walls. We install blocking anywhere it is likely to be needed before walls close.
We review the existing structure, discuss the intended layout, and identify anything that needs to be addressed before framing begins — existing mechanicals, load-bearing elements, or conditions that affect how the new framing integrates with the structure. You receive a clear written quote before work starts.
Walls are framed plumb and square. Headers are properly sized for any openings. Blocking is installed where fixtures will be mounted. The framing is done in a way that makes every subsequent trade's work — electrical, insulation, drywall — straightforward to complete.
We confirm the framing is complete and ready for inspection or the next trade before moving on. Nothing is left in a condition that creates problems for what follows.
Load-bearing walls typically run perpendicular to the floor joists above them, are often located near the centre of the home, and may align with walls or posts on the floor below. However, the only reliable way to confirm whether a wall is load-bearing is to assess the structure — which we do as part of our review before any wall removal is quoted or started.
Permit requirements depend on the municipality and whether the wall is structural. Removing a load-bearing wall almost always requires a permit and may require a structural engineer's drawings. We discuss what applies to your specific project during the quoting process so you understand what needs to be arranged before work begins.
A straightforward basement layout or a single new partition wall can be framed in a day or two. Larger or more complex scopes take longer. We provide a realistic timeline specific to your project when we quote it.
Yes — working around existing mechanicals is a standard part of renovation framing. We plan the layout to accommodate what is already in place, and build soffits or chases where needed to enclose mechanicals cleanly.
